New Delhi , May 20 2025: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has mandated all affiliated schools to set up ‘sugar boards’ as part of a wider effort to curb rising health concerns such as Type 2 diabetes and obesity among students.
These boards will educate students about the harmful effects of excessive sugar intake, highlight daily sugar limits, and promote healthier food choices.
The directive follows recommendations by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and echoes past efforts to restrict junk food in school environments.
Schools are also encouraged to conduct awareness programs and must submit activity reports, along with photographs, by July 15.
While many educators and health professionals welcomed the move, they stressed the need for parental involvement.
“Unless this is reinforced at home, the impact will remain limited,” said nutritionist Sonia Singh. Others pointed out the challenges of regulating outsourced school canteens despite earlier FSSAI restrictions.
