Virudhunagar (Tamil Nadu): At least 23 workers were killed in a powerful explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Virudhunagar district, triggering shock across the region and prompting urgent rescue operations by emergency services.
According to official and media reports, the blast occurred on Sunday at a fireworks factory in Kattanarpatti village, where workers were engaged in routine manufacturing activities. The explosion was so intense that it caused parts of the building to collapse and resulted in multiple casualties on the spot. Several others were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Authorities said that among the deceased were both men and women workers, highlighting the scale of human loss in the incident. Rescue teams, including fire and emergency services personnel, were immediately deployed to the site to control the blaze and search for survivors trapped under debris.
During the rescue operation, reports also indicated a secondary blast, which further complicated relief efforts and led to injuries among rescue workers and officials present at the site. The situation was brought under control after several hours of coordinated effort by emergency teams.
Preliminary information suggests that a large number of employees were present inside the unit at the time of the explosion. Authorities are now investigating the cause of the blast, including possible lapses in safety protocols and handling of explosive materials. The factory is reported to have been operating with a valid license, but questions have been raised about compliance with safety standards.
The Tamil Nadu government has expressed condolences over the loss of lives and announced that a detailed investigation will be conducted. Senior officials have also been directed to oversee relief measures and ensure proper medical care for the injured.
The Virudhunagar district, which is known for its fireworks industry, has witnessed several similar accidents in the past, raising recurring concerns over industrial safety and enforcement of regulations in firecracker manufacturing units.
Further updates are expected as authorities continue their investigation into the cause of the tragic explosion.
