At least 50 to 60 people were hospitalised following a suspected case of food poisoning at a wedding समारोह in Gujarat’s Dahod district, triggering panic and a swift response from health authorities.
The incident took place in Abhlod village of Dahod, where hundreds of guests had gathered for the wedding celebration on Monday evening. According to officials, around 300–400 people attended the event, and many began experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach discomfort late at night, shortly after consuming the meal.
Patients started arriving at nearby medical facilities, particularly Zydus Hospital in Dahod, around 11 pm. Doctors said the hospital had prepared in advance after receiving information that a large number of people might require treatment. Around 50–60 patients were admitted and are currently reported to be in stable condition, while others with milder symptoms were treated at local health centres or discharged after initial care.
However, broader reports suggest that the scale of the incident could be much larger. In total, over 200 to 400 guests are believed to have fallen ill after consuming food at the wedding, indicating a widespread outbreak rather than isolated cases. Panic spread across the village as ambulances and private vehicles were used to transport the affected individuals to hospitals.
Preliminary investigations point to contaminated food served at the function as the likely cause. Dishes reportedly included paneer curry, puri, dal, rice, and mango juice, with suspicion falling on certain items such as the mango-based drink or dairy products. Officials from the health and food safety departments have collected samples of the food for laboratory testing to determine the exact source of contamination.
Authorities have launched an inquiry and deployed medical teams in the affected area to monitor the situation and prevent further complications. No fatalities have been reported so far, though some patients were initially said to be in serious condition.
The incident has once again raised concerns over food safety standards at large gatherings such as weddings, where improper storage, hygiene lapses, or contaminated ingredients can quickly lead to mass illness. Experts stress the need for strict adherence to food safety guidelines to avoid such public health emergencies.
As investigations continue, officials have assured that strict action will be taken against those found responsible for any negligence in food preparation or handling.
