New Delhi: A 70-year-old woman was killed after a Mercedes and a Maruti WagonR collided head-on in Delhi’s Narela area on Saturday morning, police said.
The accident took place around 8 am near Himalayas Apartment in the Mamurpur area. According to the preliminary police investigation, the force of the collision sent the WagonR backwards, after which it hit a three-wheeler loading van that was parked nearby.
The deceased was identified as Urmila, a resident of Mamurpur. She was present near the spot when the collision occurred and became trapped between the vehicles. She suffered critical injuries and died at the scene, police said.
The driver of the WagonR sustained minor injuries and was provided medical treatment. No other serious injuries were reported in the initial assessment.
Police teams from Narela police station reached the site soon after the accident and began examining the circumstances that led to the collision. The damaged vehicles were inspected as investigators worked to establish the exact sequence of events.
The Mercedes driver was identified as Shubham, according to police and media reports. He was arrested from the spot, while investigators are examining whether speed, possible traffic violations or other factors contributed to the crash. A beer bottle was also reportedly found inside the Mercedes, and police are investigating whether alcohol played any role in the accident.
Police are also examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area and are expected to record statements from the drivers and eyewitnesses. The footage could help investigators determine the speed and movement of both vehicles immediately before the crash.
A fatal accident case is being registered at Narela police station. Urmila’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination as part of the legal procedure.
The crash has once again raised concerns over road safety in the capital, particularly regarding high-speed driving and the dangers faced by pedestrians and people near busy residential roads.
Residents in the area were shaken by the incident, which occurred during the morning hours. The presence of a parked loading vehicle added to the chain of impact after the initial collision, according to the preliminary investigation.
Authorities have not yet announced a final conclusion on the cause of the crash. The investigation will determine whether any specific traffic violation or other circumstance was responsible.
For now, police are continuing to piece together the events surrounding the fatal collision while the family of the deceased awaits completion of the post-mortem and other formalities.
