At least 89 people have lost their lives after powerful storms, heavy rain, hailstorms and lightning struck several districts of Uttar Pradesh, causing widespread destruction and disruption across the state. Officials said dozens of others were injured, while houses, electric poles and trees were severely damaged in many areas.
According to the Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner’s office, the extreme weather on Wednesday led to 89 deaths, 53 injuries, damage to 87 houses and the loss of 114 livestock. Many of the deaths were caused by collapsing walls, uprooted trees, lightning strikes and roof cave-ins during the intense storm.
Districts including Prayagraj, Bhadohi, Fatehpur, Budaun, Chandauli and Sonbhadra were among the worst affected. Prayagraj alone reported multiple casualties as strong winds and dust storms swept through the region, uprooting trees and disrupting transport and communication networks.
Visuals from affected areas showed roads blocked by fallen trees, damaged vehicles and electricity infrastructure brought down by heavy winds. In several places, mobile and power networks were also disrupted, making rescue and restoration work difficult for local authorities.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of the victims and directed officials to ensure immediate relief and compensation for those affected. He instructed district magistrates and divisional commissioners to remain on alert and personally monitor rescue operations.
The state government has ordered officials to provide financial assistance to affected families within 24 hours and ensure proper treatment for the injured. Authorities have also been directed to conduct surveys of damaged houses, crops and livestock to assess losses and speed up compensation distribution.
The India Meteorological Department has warned that thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain may continue in parts of Uttar Pradesh over the next few hours. Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors during severe weather and avoid open spaces, trees and electric poles.
