A fresh political clash erupted in Uttar Pradesh over the ongoing power situation, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav launching a sharp attack on the state government, while Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath defended his administration’s efforts, claiming that ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply remains a top priority.
In a strongly worded statement, Akhilesh Yadav described the situation as a “Maha Power Disaster,” alleging widespread and unannounced power cuts across urban and rural parts of the state amid rising temperatures. He claimed that citizens are facing severe hardship due to long outages, voltage fluctuations, and inadequate response from the electricity department.
Yadav said that despite repeated assurances from the ruling party, the ground reality remains unchanged. He accused the government of failing to upgrade infrastructure and improve distribution networks, which, according to him, has worsened the crisis during peak summer demand. He also alleged that rural areas are bearing the brunt of the shortages, affecting farmers, students, and small businesses.
Responding to the allegations, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath dismissed the criticism and said that the state government has significantly improved electricity generation and distribution over the years. He stated that providing continuous and reliable power to every household, especially in rural regions, is one of the government’s key priorities.
Officials from the Uttar Pradesh Power Department said that electricity demand has surged due to extreme heat conditions, leading to temporary strain on the grid in certain regions. However, they maintained that the situation is being actively monitored and managed through load balancing and emergency maintenance measures.
The government also highlighted its investments in new transmission lines, substation upgrades, and rural electrification projects. Authorities claimed that compared to previous years, the duration and frequency of power cuts have reduced significantly, though isolated disruptions may still occur due to technical faults or high demand.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders backed Akhilesh Yadav’s claims, stating that many districts continue to suffer from irregular supply, particularly during evening peak hours. They demanded immediate intervention and a transparent assessment of the state’s power infrastructure.
Energy experts note that Uttar Pradesh, being one of India’s most populous states, faces significant challenges in balancing peak demand with supply capacity, especially during extreme weather conditions. They suggest that long-term improvements in renewable energy integration and grid modernisation are essential to prevent recurring crises.
The issue is expected to remain politically charged as both ruling and opposition parties continue to exchange blame over the state’s power management situation.
