A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Haryana's Ambala district after a four-year-old boy, identified as Nirvair Singh, died after falling into a 220-foot-deep open borewell in Dhanaura village. The child was pulled out in the early hours of Wednesday following a marathon 21-hour rescue operation involving multiple agencies.
According to officials, Nirvair had accompanied his father, Manjit Singh, to the agricultural fields on Tuesday morning. At around 6.30 am, while playing near the field, the child accidentally slipped into the narrow nine-inch-wide abandoned borewell. Family members initially tried to rescue him but quickly alerted the authorities when their efforts failed.
A massive rescue operation was launched immediately. Teams from the Army, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and district administration worked continuously to save the child. Heavy machinery was brought to the site and a parallel pit was dug in an attempt to reach the trapped boy. Rescue efforts were also hampered by difficult soil conditions and intermittent rain.
After more than 21 hours of relentless efforts, rescuers managed to pull the child out at around 3.40 am on Wednesday. He was immediately rushed by ambulance to the Civil Hospital in Ambala Cantonment, where doctors declared him brought dead.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns over the presence of uncovered and abandoned borewells in rural areas. Despite repeated Supreme Court guidelines and several fatal incidents in the past, such open borewells continue to pose a grave threat to children across the country. The tragedy also revived memories of the famous 2006 rescue of five-year-old Prince in Haryana, who was successfully rescued after being trapped inside a borewell for nearly two days.
Following Nirvair's death, police have registered an FIR against the landowner and two other persons for alleged negligence in leaving the borewell open and unsecured. Authorities have also sealed the borewell.
The death of young Nirvair Singh has left the entire village in mourning and once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety measures to prevent such avoidable tragedies in the future.
