Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed security agencies to establish an “impregnable security grid” for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra 2026, emphasizing that the safety of pilgrims must remain the government's highest priority.
The directive came during a high-level security review meeting in New Delhi attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, intelligence agencies, the armed forces, paramilitary forces, and the administration of Jammu and Kashmir. Shah reviewed preparedness measures for the annual pilgrimage, which attracts hundreds of thousands of devotees from across the country. Reports indicate that he instructed agencies to ensure seamless coordination, enhanced surveillance, and rapid response capabilities along the entire pilgrimage route.
Officials briefed the Home Minister on security arrangements, including deployment of additional personnel, drone surveillance, intelligence gathering, anti-sabotage checks, and protection of transit camps and pilgrimage routes. Particular focus was placed on securing both the traditional Pahalgam route and the Baltal route, which are used by pilgrims traveling to the holy cave shrine of Amarnath Cave.
Shah reportedly directed security forces to maintain round-the-clock monitoring of vulnerable areas and strengthen coordination between central and local agencies. He also stressed the importance of ensuring smooth movement of pilgrims while maintaining strict security protocols. The Home Minister instructed officials to make full use of technology, including CCTV networks, drone monitoring, and real-time intelligence sharing, to prevent any potential threats.
The review comes against the backdrop of heightened security concerns in the region and follows a series of anti-terror operations conducted by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir over recent months. Authorities believe a multi-layered security arrangement will be necessary to safeguard pilgrims and maintain peace during the Yatra.
In addition to security measures, the meeting also reviewed arrangements related to accommodation, healthcare services, disaster management, transportation, and emergency response systems. Officials said special attention is being given to weather-related contingencies and medical facilities along the pilgrimage routes.
The Amarnath Yatra is one of India's most significant religious pilgrimages and is organized every year under extensive security cover. The Centre has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that devotees can undertake the pilgrimage safely and without disruption, with Shah directing agencies to leave no room for security lapses during the event.
