Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit West Bengal on Thursday evening amid intensified political activity within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following its recent electoral gains in the state. According to party sources, Shah’s visit comes at a crucial stage as the BJP prepares for key organisational decisions, including the selection of its legislative leader and the formation of a new government structure.
Before reaching West Bengal, Shah is expected to attend a separate programme in Bihar and then travel directly to Kolkata. His arrival is being seen as part of the central leadership’s direct involvement in overseeing post-election developments and ensuring a smooth transition in state leadership.
Soon after landing in West Bengal, Shah is likely to hold a series of high-level meetings with senior BJP leaders and members of the state core committee. These discussions are expected to focus on the current political situation, internal organisational readiness, and the roadmap ahead for government formation.
Sources indicate that Shah will also engage in detailed consultations ahead of the BJP Legislative Party meeting scheduled for May 8. The meeting is expected to be decisive, as party MLAs will choose their leader, who is likely to take charge as the next Chief Minister of the state. Discussions are also expected to cover cabinet formation, allocation of key portfolios, and governance priorities.
Shah has already been appointed as the BJP’s central observer for West Bengal, further underlining his role in supervising the leadership selection process. The party has also named co-observers to assist in the exercise.
The upcoming legislative party meeting is considered one of the most important political events in the state following the election results. It will mark a key step in BJP’s transition from electoral victory to administrative responsibility.
Party insiders suggest that preparations are also being made for the oath-taking ceremony, which may follow shortly after the legislative party leader is chosen. The central leadership’s active participation highlights the importance the BJP is giving to its governance plans in West Bengal at this stage.
