Guwahati: Assam’s flood situation remained serious on Saturday, with the death toll from this year’s floods rising to 98 and more than 1.55 lakh people still affected across 13 districts.

According to the latest official figures, 1,55,849 people are currently affected by floodwaters across the state. Although the number of affected districts has come down from 15 to 13, thousands of families continue to face disruption as floodwaters remain in several areas.

Golaghat is the worst-hit district, with around 58,750 people affected, followed by Sivasagar with 48,286 and Jorhat with 25,259. Other affected districts include Nagaon, Hojai, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Darrang, Biswanath, Kamrup Metropolitan, Lakhimpur, Udalguri and Charaideo. The latest death was reported from the Mahmora revenue circle in Charaideo district, taking the overall flood-related death toll this year to 98.

Relief and rehabilitation efforts are continuing in the affected areas. The administration has set up 55 relief camps where more than 10,000 displaced people are currently taking shelter. Another 18 relief distribution centres are also functioning to provide essential supplies to people in need.

The floods have also caused significant damage to agriculture and livestock. More than 10,748 hectares of crop area have been submerged, while over 47,000 animals have been affected.

The Assam government is now preparing for a detailed assessment of the damage to determine the assistance required for long-term rehabilitation. A door-to-door assessment will begin on August 9 in four of the worst-affected districts  Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat and Charaideo  and will continue until August 30.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that no affected household will be left out of the assessment and that relief will be provided according to government norms. The initial findings will be verified with affected families before the final requirement for rehabilitation funds is prepared.

The government expects to estimate the funds needed for permanent rehabilitation by September 10. Officials hope the assessment will help speed up financial assistance and rebuilding work once the flood situation improves. For now, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as thousands of people remain dependent on relief support and await a return to normal life.
