Severe flooding has left a trail of destruction across Assam's Golaghat district, with more than 52,000 families affected in the Dergaon Legislative Assembly constituency alone. Continuous heavy rainfall and overflowing rivers have inundated villages, damaged homes, submerged agricultural land, and disrupted normal life, prompting residents to demand a special economic package from the Central government for long-term rehabilitation.

According to local officials and community representatives, floodwaters have entered hundreds of homes, forcing thousands of people to take shelter in relief camps or on higher ground. Many families have lost household belongings, standing crops, livestock, and other sources of livelihood. The widespread destruction has also affected schools, roads, and public infrastructure, making rescue and relief operations more challenging.

Residents of the flood-hit areas say recurring floods have pushed many families into financial distress, with annual monsoon damage preventing them from rebuilding their lives. They have urged the Centre to announce a dedicated economic package to support the reconstruction of damaged houses, restore agricultural activities, strengthen embankments, and improve disaster-resilient infrastructure. Many believe that temporary relief alone is not enough to address the long-term impact of repeated flooding.

Relief and rescue operations are continuing with the assistance of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), district administration, and emergency response teams. Food packets, drinking water, medicines, and other essential supplies are being distributed at relief camps, while officials are monitoring river levels and weather conditions closely. Authorities have also advised residents living in vulnerable areas to remain alert and cooperate with evacuation efforts if required.

The flood crisis extends beyond Golaghat. According to ASDMA, more than 4.45 lakh people across six districts, including Golaghat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Nagaon, and Kamrup (Metro), have been affected by the ongoing deluge. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reviewed the flood situation and assured the Assam government of the Centre's full support for relief, rescue, and rehabilitation measures.

Meanwhile, several organisations, including the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), have called for a comprehensive long-term strategy to tackle Assam's recurring flood crisis. Along with immediate assistance for affected families, they have demanded scientific flood management, improved river control measures, and sustained investment in infrastructure to reduce the devastation caused by annual monsoon floods. As waters continue to recede in some areas while remaining high in others, thousands of families in Golaghat are hoping that the latest disaster will bring lasting policy action rather than another cycle of temporary relief.
