Assam:

In a rarely seen display of self-celebration, Manik Ali (32) of Mukalmua village in Assam’s Nalbari district marked his divorce by bathing in approximately 40 litres of milk, declaring it a symbolic cleanse after the end of a troubled marriage.

According to reports, Ali’s wife had eloped twice with another man, each time abandoning him and their five year old daughter. He tried to reconcile on both occasions “for the sake of our child,” yet she returned to the same decision, leaving him to endure repeated heartbreak.

Following a court grant of divorce, Ali resolved to mark the occasion in an unusual, celebratory ritual. Standing near a village tube well, he poured roughly 40 litres of milk over himself in front of neighbours, visibly surrounded by friends and community members. A video shared on social media captured the moment he joyfully exclaimed, “I am free from today.” A neighbour recorded the entire episode, which later went viral online.

He described the milk bath as a form of “purification” and a bold step towards starting anew, saying, “I gave her chances, but when someone makes the same mistake again and again, there comes a time when you have to choose peace over pain.”

Married for about seven years, including a year-long courtship, the couple separated legally after their fifth wedding anniversary. Their daughter will remain in the custody of the mother, as stated by Ali.

Locals described Ali as a man who had fought to preserve his marriage despite years of emotional strain. That determination ended as he resolved to seek peace for himself and their daughter. The unconventional celebration drew attention on social media, prompting discussion as neighbours witnessed a deeply personal ritual of closure.

Experts note that such public symbolic acts reveal how some individuals seek a dramatic release after enduring emotional turmoil. The act of bathing in milk, often associated with purity in Indian rituals, reflected Ali’s wish to cleanse his past, embrace the future, and declare himself reborn.

While unusual, the celebration has spurred broader commentary on coping with marital breakdown. In many parts of India, divorce remains a taboo topic, yet Ali’s act resonated with discussions about self-worth, emotional healing, and personal dignity.

As the video circulated online, many expressed empathy for Ali’s ordeal and praised his candid emotional journey. One viewer remarked, “He shows courage to move on and set an example for others trapped in unhappy relationships.”

The divorce, filings of which were made in local court, has reached finalisation, allowing both parties to begin separate lives. Neighbours continue to speak of the incident with a mix of surprise and admiration, recognising Ali’s unusual but heartfelt method of marking a fresh start.

Legal experts emphasise that divorce laws in India recognise an individual’s right to remarry or live independently, and while Ali’s public milk bath is unorthodox, it is legally permissible. Psychologists suggest that visible rituals of closure may help individuals in emotional recovery by translating an internal break into a tangible act of renewal.

In blending tradition, emotion, and celebration, Ali’s milk bath marks more than personal revenge. For him, it symbolises liberation — an affirmation of self respect, a commitment to peace, and the beginning of his next chapter.
