In a major breakthrough against drug trafficking, Assam Police seized a large consignment of Yaba tablets worth more than ₹3 crore and arrested three alleged drug peddlers during a joint operation in Dhubri district. The operation, carried out on the basis of specific intelligence inputs, is part of the state government's ongoing crackdown on narcotics smuggling across the Northeast.
According to police officials, a joint team of the District Crime Unit and Salkocha Outpost intercepted a Bolero vehicle on National Highway-17 after receiving information about the movement of illegal drugs. During the search, officers recovered 23,600 suspected Yaba tablets weighing approximately 2.48 kilograms. The estimated market value of the seized contraband is over ₹3 crore.
The three accused arrested in connection with the seizure have been identified as Joynuddin Sk, Aminur Islam and Robial Islam. They were taken into custody at the spot, and the vehicle used for transporting the drugs was also seized. Police have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and launched further investigations to trace the source and destination of the consignment.
Senior police officials said the operation was the result of coordinated intelligence gathering and close surveillance of suspected drug trafficking routes. Investigators believe the seized Yaba tablets were part of a larger interstate or cross-border smuggling network operating through Assam, which shares strategic borders with several northeastern states and neighbouring countries.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the police team for the successful operation and reiterated the state government's commitment to its "Assam Against Drugs" campaign. He has repeatedly stated that the government will continue taking strict action against drug traffickers and dismantle organised narcotics networks operating in the state. Recent weeks have witnessed several major seizures of Yaba tablets and other narcotics across Assam, reflecting intensified enforcement efforts.
Yaba is a highly addictive synthetic drug containing methamphetamine and caffeine. It is banned in India and is often smuggled through international borders into the northeastern region before being transported to other parts of the country. Security agencies have identified the Northeast as one of the key transit corridors for such narcotics.
Police officials said efforts are now focused on identifying the wider network linked to the seized consignment. Further arrests are likely as investigators examine digital evidence, financial transactions and communication records recovered during the operation. Authorities have reaffirmed that anti-drug drives will continue across the state to curb the growing menace of narcotics trafficking and protect young people from substance abuse.
