The Centre has ordered the immediate shutdown of the Attari Integrated Check Post following Tuesday’s terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 tourists dead. Local traders warned that sealing the Attari frontier would severely disrupt cross-border trade.
Security forces have bolstered patrols along National Highway-144, the critical route linking Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch. Rajouri traffic inspector Ahmed Din said all local vehicles are being checked and fully laden trucks turned away to prevent gridlock. “Traffic police, district police and the Army are manning checkpoints around the clock,” he added.
In response to the attack, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) announced five key decisions on Wednesday:
Defence, naval and air advisers at Pakistan’s High Commission in New Delhi have been declared persona non grata and must leave within a week; India will recall its own advisers from Islamabad.
The Attari Integrated Check Post will remain closed until further notice.
The 1960 Indus Waters Treaty is suspended pending Pakistan’s permanent cessation of cross-border terrorism.
All SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) permits for Pakistani nationals are cancelled; holders have 48 hours to exit India.
Staffing at both Indian and Pakistani High Commissions will be reduced from 55 to 30 personnel by May 1, 2025.
Security forces have also launched valley-wide operations to track down the militants responsible for the Pahalgam strike
