A man in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly has been arrested for allegedly throwing acid on a woman and her family members after his marriage proposal was rejected, police said on Sunday.
According to investigators, the accused attacked the family late at night after reportedly becoming enraged over the refusal. The woman, along with several relatives, suffered burn injuries in the incident and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials said at least one victim is in serious condition.
Police stated that the accused had been pressuring the woman’s family for marriage for some time. After repeated refusals, he allegedly entered the house carrying acid and attacked the victims before attempting to flee. Local residents later helped police identify and detain him.
Senior police officers said a case has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to acid attack, attempt to murder and criminal intimidation. Additional provisions under laws protecting women may also be invoked during the investigation.
Authorities confirmed that forensic teams collected evidence from the scene and are examining how the accused obtained the acid. Police said further questioning is underway to determine whether anyone else assisted in planning the attack.
The incident has triggered anger in the area, with local residents demanding strict punishment for the accused. Women’s rights activists also raised concerns over the continued availability of corrosive substances despite regulations on acid sales.
Acid attacks remain among the most brutal forms of gender-based violence in India. Over the years, courts and activists have repeatedly called for tighter enforcement of restrictions on acid sale and stronger rehabilitation support for survivors.
Police officials in Bareilly said security has been increased around the victims’ residence and assured that the case would be fast-tracked. The injured family members are currently undergoing treatment under medical supervision.
