On October 8, the Tamil Nadu government issued an ordinance to control and outlaw internet gaming in the state. According to the state government, an online gaming authority will be established to exercise the power granted by this ordinance. The government released a gazette notification in this regard on October 3.

The Tamil Nadu Online Gambling Prohibition and Regulation of Online Games Ordinance-2022, which was issued by Governor RN Ravi on October 1st, stated that it will go into effect on a date announced by the government.

Many families have been wrecked by online gaming and gambling. The fact that so many people are killing themselves as a result of gaming addiction has also had an impact on people's health. The social system has thus been severely impacted as well.

In order for it to execute the authority granted to it and carry out the duties delegated to it by this Ordinance, a body known as the Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Authority shall also be constituted.

This authority will control internet gaming, grant local online gaming companies certificates of registration, and categorise games like rummy and poker. The notification states that anyone who provides online gambling services or violates the rules outlined in the Schedule with money or other bets will be punished with either general or specialised imprisonment for a term that may not exceed three years, a fine that may not exceed Rs 10 lakh, or both.

On September 26, the ordinance was passed by the cabinet under the direction of Chief Minister MK Stalin. As a result of K Chandru, a former judge on the Madras High Court, reporting on the negative effects of gambling and online gambling, the Chief Minister introduced the bill in the Assembly.

Online gambling is when bets are placed and money is made through the use of the Internet. The only distinction between it and a casino is that it is played virtually. Poker, sports games, casino games, and more games are included. The state government's action follows an increase in suicides caused by addiction to internet gambling.
