Kolkata: The oath-taking ceremony of the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal is likely to be held on May 9, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah expected to attend, according to party sources.

Preparations are reportedly underway for a large-scale event in Kolkata, where senior BJP leaders are coordinating arrangements for the swearing-in ceremony. Security agencies have also begun planning in anticipation of high-profile attendance, including top national leaders and chief ministers from BJP-ruled states.

Sources within the party said that discussions are ongoing regarding the venue and final logistics, but the date has been tentatively fixed for May 9, subject to formal confirmation after completion of procedural requirements.

The development comes after the BJP’s claimed breakthrough in West Bengal politics, which party leaders have described as a “historic mandate.” However, official notifications and final administrative approvals are still awaited before the government formation process is formally completed.

Party insiders said that once the final numbers are certified, the newly elected leadership will stake claim to form the government, following which the Governor will administer the oath of office to the Chief Minister and cabinet members.

If confirmed, the presence of PM Modi and Amit Shah is expected to give significant political weight to the ceremony. Senior BJP leaders have also been invited, and preparations are being made for a large gathering of supporters and party workers.

Security arrangements are likely to be extensive, given the scale of the event and the presence of top constitutional functionaries. Coordination between state police and central agencies has already begun at preliminary levels.

Meanwhile, political reactions have started emerging, with opposition parties questioning the claim of government formation and awaiting official clarity on numbers and procedural completion.

As things stand, the final confirmation of the oath-taking ceremony is expected only after all constitutional formalities are completed. The BJP leadership, however, remains confident about moving ahead with the formation process in the coming days.
