Kolkata: In a significant political development, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders on Wednesday held a high-level closed-door meeting at the state secretariat Nabanna in Howrah, as discussions around government formation in West Bengal continue to intensify, according to party sources.
The meeting comes at a crucial time, with political uncertainty still prevailing over the final shape of the next government in the state. Sources said the discussions primarily focused on post-election strategy, possible alliance equations, and the roadmap for forming a stable administration.
Top BJP state leaders, along with select central observers, were reportedly present at the meeting. Party insiders indicated that the leadership reviewed the current numerical position in the Assembly and assessed potential support from newly elected MLAs, including independents and smaller regional groups.
Although the BJP has not officially made a public claim about securing a majority, internal discussions are said to be centred on consolidating support and ensuring that all elected representatives remain aligned with the party’s position during the crucial post-poll phase.
The meeting at Nabanna is also being viewed as a strategic move, as the location is traditionally associated with the administrative headquarters of the West Bengal government. Holding discussions there has added political symbolism, reflecting the party’s intent to project readiness for governance.
Sources further added that issues related to cabinet formation, priority governance agendas, and administrative transition were also briefly discussed. However, no official statement has been released by the party regarding the outcome of the meeting.
Meanwhile, opposition parties have been closely watching the developments, questioning the BJP’s numbers and claiming that the political situation in the state remains uncertain. They have also accused the party of attempting to influence post-election alignments.
Security outside key administrative buildings remained tight during the meeting, although no untoward incidents were reported.
As the situation evolves, further political consultations are expected in the coming days. The BJP leadership is likely to continue discussions with elected representatives and allies before making any formal announcement regarding government formation in West Bengal.
