New Delhi: In a significant push towards austerity and administrative discipline, several senior leaders of the Narendra Modi government have reportedly reduced the size of their official convoys following the Prime Minister’s recent appeal to promote simplicity in public life and reduce unnecessary expenditure.
Sources indicate that multiple leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) across different states and at the Centre have begun voluntarily scaling down their security and convoy arrangements. The move comes after PM Modi, during a recent internal meeting and public remarks, urged party members and public representatives to adopt a more restrained lifestyle and set an example for efficient governance.
According to party insiders, the directive is not a formal policy but a “moral appeal” aimed at improving public perception, reducing fuel consumption, and cutting down administrative costs. Following this, several Union ministers and state-level leaders have reportedly reduced their escort vehicles, pilot cars, and support staff vehicles in official convoys.
In some cases, convoy sizes have been reduced by nearly half, with leaders choosing to travel with minimal security vehicles during non-sensitive movements. Officials said that while security protocols remain unchanged for high-risk travel, routine movements are being made simpler wherever possible.
The initiative has been welcomed by sections within the party, who view it as consistent with the broader message of “minimum government, maximum governance.” Party workers also believe that such steps help bridge the gap between political leadership and the public by projecting a more grounded image.
However, opposition parties have reacted cautiously, arguing that symbolic austerity measures must be accompanied by stronger action on governance and public welfare spending. Some critics have also pointed out that security decisions should remain strictly under professional assessment rather than voluntary reduction.
Despite differing political reactions, the move has gained attention for its symbolic value. Analysts say that even small gestures like reducing convoy size can send a strong message about accountability and responsible use of public resources, especially at a time when economic efficiency is a key concern.
Officials clarified that no compromise is being made on security standards, and any changes are being implemented only after coordination with security agencies.
With this development, the BJP leadership appears to be reinforcing a message of simplicity and discipline, aligning with PM Modi’s broader governance narrative focused on efficiency, restraint, and public trust.
