The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) established a strong lead in the Falta Assembly repoll in West Bengal on Sunday, with the party moving ahead by more than 14,000 votes after the completion of five rounds of counting.
According to early counting trends, BJP candidate Debangshu Panda surged ahead of his nearest rivals as counting progressed under heavy security arrangements. Party workers and supporters gathered outside the counting centre celebrating the lead with slogans, party flags and crackers as the margin widened steadily.
The Falta Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas became one of the most closely watched seats in the state after election authorities ordered a complete repoll across all booths following allegations of large-scale irregularities and disturbances during the earlier voting process.
After five rounds of counting, Debangshu Panda maintained a comfortable lead over CPI(M) candidate Sambhu Nath Kurmi, while Congress candidate Abdul Razzak Molla remained far behind in the race. Trinamool Congress nominee Jahangir Khan, who had earlier announced his withdrawal from the contest before the repoll, was also trailing significantly.
Security remained tight around the counting venue with central forces and police personnel deployed in large numbers to avoid any untoward incident. Election officials said the counting process was continuing peacefully and smoothly.
The repoll itself witnessed a high voter turnout, with many residents claiming they were able to cast their votes freely and without fear due to the presence of central security forces. The constituency had drawn statewide attention after serious complaints emerged regarding alleged electoral malpractice during the earlier phase of polling.
Political reactions started pouring in soon after the counting trends became clear. BJP leaders expressed confidence that the party was heading towards a decisive victory in the constituency, which had long been considered politically significant in the region.
The Falta repoll is being closely monitored as the result is expected to carry major political significance in West Bengal ahead of future electoral battles. Observers believe the outcome could influence political momentum for both the ruling establishment and the opposition in the state.
With several rounds of counting still remaining, officials said the final result would only become clear later in the day. However, the BJP’s early lead has already intensified political discussions across Bengal.
