The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has strongly criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that it is using the issue of women empowerment as a cover to push what the party called a “dangerous delimitation exercise” in the country.
In a sharp political attack, senior TMC leaders claimed that the proposed or discussed changes related to delimitation could have far-reaching consequences on the federal structure and political representation of several states, particularly in eastern India. The party alleged that such moves are being projected under progressive themes like women empowerment, while their actual impact may be very different.
TMC leaders said that any delimitation process must be carried out with full transparency, consensus among states, and proper consideration of population diversity and regional balance. They warned that altering constituency boundaries or representation patterns without adequate consultation could disturb the democratic balance between states.
“In the name of women empowerment, the BJP is pushing a dangerous delimitation exercise,” a TMC spokesperson said, accusing the ruling party at the Centre of attempting to reshape political representation in a way that could disadvantage certain regions. The party further alleged that such decisions should not be taken unilaterally.
The TMC also raised concerns that discussions around delimitation, if not handled carefully, could become politically sensitive in states like West Bengal, where population density and demographic composition vary significantly across districts. Party leaders stressed that any such exercise must ensure fairness and equal representation for all communities.
Reiterating its stand, the party said that women empowerment is an important constitutional and social goal, but should not be linked with structural political changes that affect electoral boundaries. TMC leaders argued that mixing the two issues could create confusion and mistrust among voters.
Political observers note that delimitation has often been a contentious issue in Indian politics, as it directly affects the number of parliamentary and assembly seats allocated to states. Any proposed change tends to trigger debates on federal balance, representation, and electoral fairness.
The BJP has not yet issued a detailed response to the TMC’s latest allegations at the time of reporting. However, political analysts expect a strong counter-response, as delimitation and related reforms remain sensitive topics in national politics.
With both parties exchanging sharp statements, the issue is likely to become another flashpoint in the ongoing political tussle between the TMC and BJP, especially ahead of future elections.
