The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP, has filed a police complaint against Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for allegedly calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah “traitors” during a public event in Uttar Pradesh.
According to reports, BJYM spokesperson Abhishek Dubey submitted a complaint at the Tigri Police Station in South Delhi, demanding the registration of an FIR against Rahul Gandhi over his controversial remarks made at an event in Rae Bareli on Wednesday.
During his speech, Rahul Gandhi allegedly urged supporters to tell RSS workers that Prime Minister Modi, Amit Shah and the BJP had “betrayed” the country by “selling India” and “attacking the Constitution.” He also accused the Centre of damaging the country’s economic system and favouring select industrialists.
The BJP strongly condemned the remarks, calling them “shameful” and “anti-national.” Several BJP leaders demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of crossing the limits of political discourse. BJP leaders said the comments insulted not only the Prime Minister and Home Minister but also the mandate of the people who elected the government.
BJYM leaders argued in their complaint that Gandhi’s remarks could disturb public harmony and were intended to provoke political tensions. The BJP youth wing also alleged that the statements amounted to spreading hatred and disrespecting constitutional institutions.
The controversy has further intensified the ongoing political confrontation between the Congress and the BJP ahead of upcoming electoral battles. BJP leaders across several states, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, criticised Rahul Gandhi’s comments, while Congress leaders defended his statements as part of political criticism against the government’s policies.
Rahul Gandhi, however, reportedly refused to withdraw or apologise for his remarks. Speaking later, he reiterated his criticism of the BJP leadership and claimed that the ruling party had weakened democratic institutions and harmed the country’s economy.
The police have not yet officially confirmed whether an FIR has been registered in the matter. However, the issue has triggered a fresh political storm, with both the BJP and Congress trading sharp accusations over the language used in public discourse.
