Congress President and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge launched a sharp attack on the Central government on Saturday, alleging that it has an “intention to change the structure of the Constitution and take over executive power.”
His remarks came in the backdrop of heated political debate over recent legislative proposals, including the Delimitation Bill and related constitutional amendment measures, which were recently defeated or stalled in Parliament after failing to secure the required majority.
Addressing the media in Parliament premises, Kharge said the opposition INDIA bloc is not against women’s reservation, but strongly objects to the way the government has linked it with delimitation provisions. He accused the ruling NDA of attempting to push multiple changes together in a manner that, according to him, could alter the balance of India’s federal and constitutional framework.
Kharge further alleged that the government’s intention behind the proposed changes was to ensure greater control over future delimitation exercises through a simple majority in Parliament. He said this could weaken constitutional safeguards and concentrate power in the hands of the executive.
“We are not against women’s reservation. We have supported it consistently. But the way it has been brought along with delimitation provisions raises serious concerns,” Kharge said, reiterating the opposition’s stand.
The comments come after intense parliamentary proceedings where the government’s legislative push faced resistance from opposition parties. The INDIA bloc has maintained that while it supports electoral and social reforms, they must not compromise constitutional structure or federal principles.
Political observers say the issue has further deepened the confrontation between the ruling party and the opposition ahead of upcoming political and legislative battles. The government, however, has defended its proposals, arguing that the reforms are aimed at ensuring better representation and long-pending structural changes in the electoral system.
Earlier also, Kharge has been critical of the Centre on multiple issues, including governance, federal relations, and parliamentary procedures, making him one of the key opposition voices in national politics.
The debate over delimitation and constitutional amendments is expected to continue in the coming days, with both sides firm on their positions.
