One civilian was killed and two others injured after an incident of firing in Manipur’s Noney district on Friday, triggering security alerts and fresh search operations in the area. Police have arrested a cadre of the proscribed outfit Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) in connection with the incident, officials said.
According to preliminary reports, the firing took place in a remote area of the district under circumstances that are still being investigated. Security forces and local police teams rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about gunfire, where they found three individuals with injuries. One of them later succumbed, while the injured were shifted to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Officials said the arrested KCP cadre is being interrogated to determine the motive behind the attack and whether more individuals were involved. Security agencies have also launched coordinated search operations in surrounding areas to track down any additional suspects linked to the incident.
The situation in the region remains tense but under control, with additional forces deployed as a precautionary measure. Authorities have appealed to residents to remain calm and report any suspicious activity to security personnel.
Manipur has witnessed intermittent incidents of violence in recent years, with security forces maintaining heightened vigilance across sensitive districts. The latest incident has once again raised concerns about civilian safety and ongoing security challenges in the region.
Police have registered a case and said further details will emerge as the investigation progresses. The identity of the deceased civilian is being verified, and post-mortem procedures are underway.
Officials reiterated that strict action will be taken against those responsible, and efforts are continuing to ensure peace and stability in the affected area.
