West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday held a meeting with BJP actor-MLAs and representatives from the Bengali film industry to discuss concerns surrounding the atmosphere in Tollygunje and assure artists of a “fear-free” working environment.
The meeting took place at Nabanna amid growing political tensions within the Bengali entertainment industry after several actors and technicians raised concerns over alleged political pressure, work-related insecurity and divisions within Tollywood. BJP legislators from the film industry, including actor-MLAs, attended the discussion along with senior government officials and members of various artists’ associations.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister reportedly assured all stakeholders that no artist would face discrimination or intimidation because of political ideology. She emphasised that the film industry should remain a space for creativity and professional work, free from political hostility or fear.
Sources said discussions also focused on improving coordination between artists’ bodies, production houses and the state administration to maintain a healthy working atmosphere in Tollygunje. Several participants are understood to have highlighted issues related to work opportunities, online harassment and political targeting within the entertainment sector.
The Chief Minister urged artists not to allow political differences to affect professional relationships and called for unity within the industry. She also assured support from the state government for the growth of Bengali cinema and television.
The meeting comes at a time when political rivalry between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP has increasingly reflected within sections of the entertainment industry. In recent months, several actors, directors and technicians have publicly spoken about ideological divides and workplace tensions linked to politics.
Following the meeting, some attendees described the discussion as positive and constructive, saying there was an effort to restore confidence among artists across political lines. Government officials stated that the administration remains committed to ensuring safety, equal opportunities and a peaceful environment for all members of the film fraternity.
Tollygunje, popularly known as the hub of the Bengali film and television industry, has witnessed repeated debates over political influence in recent years. Thursday’s meeting is being seen as an attempt by the state government to ease tensions and reassure industry members ahead of several upcoming film and television projects.
