A local Congress leader was stabbed to death in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district on Wednesday, triggering political outrage and prompting a massive police search operation to trace the attackers. The deceased has been identified as Amit Kol, the district president of the Congress Scheduled Tribes Morcha in Rewa.
According to police, the incident took place near a petrol pump in Shanti Vihar Colony in the Transport Nagar area under the Civil Lines police station limits. Amit Kol was reportedly standing with a few friends when a group of assailants arrived in multiple vehicles and attacked him with sharp weapons. He sustained multiple stab injuries and collapsed on the spot.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers fled immediately after carrying out the assault. Kol was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but doctors declared him dead. The brutal killing has sent shockwaves through local political circles and sparked demands for swift action against those responsible.
Police officials said the motive behind the murder is still unclear and all possible angles are being investigated. Rewa Superintendent of Police Gurukaran Singh said investigators are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify the accused and track their movements before and after the attack. Two motorcycles recovered from the scene are so being examined as part of the investigation.
Authorities have launched a search operation to trace the assailants, with teams gathering evidence and questioning witnesses. Initial reports indicate that multiple attackers may have been involved, though police have not confirmed the exact number of suspects.
Congress leaders condemned the killing and demanded a thorough probe, while local party workers called for the immediate arrest of those involved.
