Congress MP Jebi Mather has said that the party’s high command will take a final decision on the Chief Ministerial candidate in Kerala through a democratic and consultative process, even as discussions intensify within the party over leadership prospects ahead of the next state political developments.
Speaking to reporters, Mather emphasised that the Congress has always followed an internal democratic tradition while selecting leaders for key positions. She added that the decision regarding who will lead the party in Kerala, if it comes to forming a government, will be taken collectively by the central leadership after considering feedback from state leaders, elected representatives, and organisational units.
“The party high command will decide in a democratic manner. There is a proper process of consultation, and everyone’s views are taken into account before a final decision is made,” Mather said.
Her remarks come amid ongoing speculation in political circles about leadership choices in Kerala’s Congress unit, where multiple senior leaders are seen as potential contenders. The Congress, as part of the United Democratic Front (UDF), is aiming to strengthen its position in the state by presenting a united front and avoiding internal divisions.
Mather also stressed that the focus of the party remains on public issues such as development, employment, welfare schemes, and strengthening governance alternatives in Kerala. She said leadership discussions should not distract from the larger goal of connecting with the people and addressing their concerns.
Within the Congress, the role of the central leadership, often referred to as the “high command,” has traditionally been crucial in resolving leadership questions, especially in states where multiple senior leaders are active. Party insiders say consultations are ongoing and no final decision has been announced yet.
Political observers note that Kerala remains a key battleground for both the Congress-led UDF and the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), making leadership clarity an important factor ahead of future electoral contests.
Mather’s statement is being seen as an attempt to reinforce unity within the party and signal that internal processes will be handled in an orderly and consensus-driven manner. Further clarity on leadership decisions is expected once the party completes its internal consultations.
