The political battle over the NEET controversy intensified on Monday as the Congress and several Opposition parties moved adjournment notices in both Houses of Parliament, demanding an immediate discussion on the alleged police action against students protesting over the examination issue. The move is expected to trigger another stormy day during the ongoing Monsoon Session, with the Opposition accusing the Centre of suppressing peaceful demonstrations instead of addressing students' concerns.
In the Lok Sabha, Congress General Secretary and MP K.C. Venugopal submitted an Adjournment Motion seeking suspension of regular business to discuss what he described as the "brutal, unprovoked and disproportionate" use of force by the Delhi Police against students protesting at Jantar Mantar. Congress MP Hibi Eden also filed a separate notice, alleging excessive force by security personnel, including the Rapid Action Force, during the 'Chalo Sansad' march organised by student groups.
In the Rajya Sabha, senior Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury invoked Rule 267, requesting the suspension of scheduled business for an urgent debate on the alleged police crackdown. Opposition leaders argued that Parliament must discuss both the NEET examination controversy and the handling of student protests, calling the issue one of national importance affecting millions of young aspirants.
The Congress has maintained that the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is not enough to resolve the crisis. Party leaders are now demanding accountability from officials responsible for the alleged police action and have also sought an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Some Opposition parties have expanded their demands by seeking action against Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the handling of law and order during the protests.
The government, meanwhile, has defended its response to the NEET controversy, highlighting ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the examination system and preventing future paper leaks. However, the Opposition has indicated that it will continue pressing for a detailed parliamentary discussion, warning that normal proceedings may remain disrupted until the issue is taken up.
The developments come after days of nationwide demonstrations by students and youth organisations demanding greater transparency in the conduct of competitive examinations. The controversy has now shifted from the streets to Parliament, where the NEET issue is expected to dominate political debate throughout the week as both the government and the Opposition prepare for another round of confrontation.
