The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government in Kerala is set to take oath today, with Chief Minister-designate V.D. Satheesan announcing the full list of ministers ahead of the swearing-in ceremony.
The oath-taking ceremony will be held in Thiruvananthapuram in the presence of senior political leaders, party workers, and invited guests. Security arrangements have been tightened around the venue as large crowds are expected to attend the event marking the return of the UDF to power in the state.
V.D. Satheesan, who was elected leader of the UDF legislature party after the alliance secured victory in the Assembly elections, said the new government would focus on governance, employment generation, financial recovery, and welfare measures. He also stressed the importance of transparency and collective leadership in the functioning of the Cabinet.
The newly announced Cabinet includes senior Congress leaders along with representatives from alliance partners, reflecting regional and community balance within the coalition. Several fresh faces have also been included, signalling an attempt to combine experience with younger leadership.
Political observers are closely watching the formation of the new government, especially the allocation of key portfolios such as finance, home, health, and education. Discussions around Cabinet representation had continued over the past few days before the final list was cleared by the alliance leadership.
The UDF’s return to power comes after a closely fought election campaign centred around issues such as unemployment, inflation, welfare delivery, and governance. Supporters of the alliance celebrated across several districts after the election results, while party leaders described the mandate as a vote for change.
The new government is expected to hold its first Cabinet meeting soon after the swearing-in ceremony, where initial administrative decisions and priority policies are likely to be discussed.
