The death toll in the tragic boat capsizing incident at Bargi Dam in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur has risen to nine, while six people remain missing, prompting the state government to order a high-level probe into the disaster.
The accident occurred on Thursday evening when a cruise boat operated by the state tourism department overturned in the reservoir of the Narmada River after being caught in a sudden storm. According to officials, around 29–31 people were on board, including tourists and crew members.
Rescue teams recovered five more bodies a day after the incident, taking the total number of fatalities to nine. Meanwhile, intensive search operations are still underway to trace six missing passengers. Teams from the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are continuing efforts in the dam area.
Authorities confirmed that at least 28 people were rescued, many of them with the help of local residents who rushed to the spot and assisted in saving lives. Their role has been widely acknowledged, with the state government announcing that such rescuers will be honoured for their bravery.
Preliminary reports and survivor accounts have raised serious concerns over safety lapses. Several passengers alleged that life jackets were either unavailable or distributed only after the boat started sinking, indicating possible negligence in safety protocols.
Taking note of these allegations, the Madhya Pradesh government has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced that a high-level committee will investigate the cause of the accident, examine compliance with safety regulations, and recommend measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Action has already been initiated against those responsible. Several staff members associated with the cruise service have been terminated or suspended pending investigation. Additionally, the state has temporarily halted similar cruise operations until safety standards are reviewed.
The tragedy has sparked nationwide concern over tourism safety and regulatory enforcement, especially at popular water destinations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences and announced financial assistance for the families of the deceased and injured.
As rescue efforts continue and investigations begin, the incident stands as a grim reminder of the need for strict adherence to safety norms in public transport and tourism services.
