New Delhi: Delhi is set to further strengthen its public transport network with the addition of 200 new electric buses, the launch of an interstate e-bus service to Karnal and 56 new Ladies Special bus services.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted the expansion in a post on X, saying Delhi has witnessed a major shift towards electric mobility in public transport over the past year and a half. She said the city now has the country’s largest electric bus fleet and that the latest additions will further accelerate the transition to cleaner public transport.
The 200 new zero-emission buses are expected to take Delhi’s total bus fleet to around 6,800. The expanded fleet will include 4,938 electric buses and around 1,750 CNG buses. The new electric buses comprise 88 12-metre buses and 112 nine-metre DEVi buses, with the smaller vehicles aimed at improving last-mile connectivity.
The buses come with several passenger-friendly features, including CCTV cameras, panic buttons, real-time tracking and accessibility facilities for passengers with disabilities. The government has set a larger target of expanding Delhi’s total bus fleet to nearly 14,000 buses by the financial year 2028-29.
A major highlight of the latest transport push is the Delhi-Karnal interstate electric bus service. Five fully electric, air-conditioned buses will operate on the approximately 133-km route. The service is planned to offer 10 trips in each direction every day.
The route will connect Maharana Pratap ISBT at Kashmere Gate with Karnal and cover several important locations, including Singhu Border, Rai, Bhalgarh, Murthal, Ganaur, Samalkha, Panipat, Gharaunda and Madhuban. Officials said the service will provide commuters with a cleaner and more comfortable option for intercity travel. The government is also focusing on improving public transport for women. Fifty-six new Ladies Special services are being introduced, with routes planned to connect residential areas with major employment, commercial, educational and government hubs. Key destinations include Nehru Place, AIIMS, South Extension, R.K. Puram, Connaught Place, ITO, Delhi Secretariat, Karol Bagh, Kashmere Gate and Shivaji Stadium. Alongside the bus expansion, a high-capacity public EV charging station is being inaugurated at the DTC’s Rajghat Depot. The government says the combination of electric buses, charging infrastructure, interstate connectivity and dedicated women’s services is aimed at creating a cleaner, safer and more accessible public transport system for Delhi.
