Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent emphasis on austerity and reduction in government expenditure, the Delhi government has issued fresh instructions limiting the use of official vehicles by ministers and senior officials. The move is being viewed as part of a broader effort to promote financial discipline and reduce unnecessary administrative spending.

According to government sources, the new directive issued by the office of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta asks departments to strictly regulate the use of government vehicles and avoid non-essential travel. Officials have reportedly been advised to ensure that official transport is used only for government-related duties and not for personal purposes.

The order comes at a time when governments across the country are facing increasing pressure to optimise public expenditure while maintaining essential services. Sources said the Delhi administration wants departments to adopt a more cost-conscious approach in day-to-day functioning.

Under the new guidelines, departments may also be required to review the number of vehicles attached to different offices and reduce excessive allocations wherever possible. Senior officers have been directed to monitor fuel consumption and vehicle maintenance expenses more carefully.

The austerity push gained momentum after Prime Minister Modi recently highlighted the importance of simplicity and responsible use of public resources in governance. Several state governments and administrative departments are now reportedly reviewing their own expenditure patterns in response to the Centre’s broader message on fiscal discipline.

Political reactions to the decision have also started emerging. Supporters of the move described it as a positive step towards accountable governance and efficient use of taxpayer money. Critics, however, questioned whether the restrictions would significantly impact overall government spending or remain largely symbolic.

Officials familiar with the matter said emergency services, law enforcement operations and essential administrative duties would remain unaffected by the restrictions. The focus of the order is primarily on reducing avoidable usage and improving monitoring systems.

The Delhi government is also expected to encourage greater use of shared transportation arrangements during official meetings and events. Some departments may additionally shift toward digital meetings to minimise travel-related costs.

The latest decision reflects a growing emphasis on austerity measures in governance, with authorities aiming to project an image of administrative efficiency and financial responsibility while responding to public expectations regarding transparency in government expenditure.
