The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on Wednesday seeking an independent investigation into the alleged police action against protesters during the recent demonstration led by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk at Jantar Mantar. The petition calls for a court-monitored probe into the conduct of the Delhi Police during the protest and the subsequent handling of demonstrators.

The PIL has been filed in the wake of allegations that police used excessive force while dispersing protesters and detaining several participants. It seeks an impartial inquiry by an independent agency and urges the court to ensure accountability if any violations of constitutional rights or standard policing procedures are established.

According to court filings, the petition argues that the right to peaceful protest is a fundamental democratic right and contends that allegations of police excesses warrant judicial scrutiny. The matter was mentioned before a Bench headed by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia for urgent listing, following widespread public attention over the incident.

The hearing comes against the backdrop of continuing protests over the alleged NEET paper leak and the police action during the "Sansad Chalo" march. Opposition parties have criticised the Centre over the handling of the demonstrations, while the Delhi Police has maintained that security measures were necessary to preserve law and order in the national capital.

The High Court's proceedings are expected to focus on whether an independent investigation is warranted and what directions, if any, should be issued to the authorities. The outcome of the hearing could have wider implications for the ongoing debate over policing of public protests and the protection of citizens' constitutional rights.
