A devastating hotel fire in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar has exposed serious violations of safety regulations, with investigators alleging that the owner’s pursuit of profit led to unauthorized expansion and dangerous operating conditions. The blaze, which killed 21 people, including several foreign nationals, has triggered a wider investigation into illegal constructions and fire safety lapses across the capital.

According to police, hotel owner Lovkesh Bajaj allegedly admitted during questioning that he expanded the property believing that “everything works in Delhi,” a remark that has since become symbolic of the alleged disregard for regulations. Investigators claim the building was originally permitted to operate only six rooms under Delhi’s bed-and-breakfast policy but had been expanded to nearly 25–26 rooms, including accommodations in the basement. Additional floors were reportedly constructed without proper approvals, and the establishment lacked mandatory fire safety clearance.

Officials further allege that the property was generating significant income from room rentals and a ground-floor restaurant, despite not having the required licence to run such an establishment. During the probe, authorities found multiple irregularities, including the presence of gas cylinders without a registered gas connection for the premises. Police believe these violations may have contributed to the scale of the tragedy.

One of the most shocking allegations to emerge from the investigation is that Bajaj reportedly drove past the burning building while rescue operations were underway but did not stop. Police sources claim he left the area and continued moving across different parts of Delhi before being traced and arrested later that day. Investigators have described him as uncooperative during questioning.

The investigation has also widened to include hotel manager Jai Mishra, who allegedly handled the property’s operations and accounts. Multiple police teams have been deployed to locate him. Authorities are examining ownership records, licensing documents, fire safety compliance, and the role of staff members who remain untraceable.

The tragedy has prompted the Delhi government to announce a citywide crackdown on properties violating fire safety norms. Officials say inspections will be intensified to prevent similar disasters and ensure stricter enforcement of building and safety regulations.

As grieving families await answers, the Malviya Nagar fire has once again raised troubling questions about illegal construction, regulatory failures, and accountability in one of India’s busiest cities.
