Panaji: A doctor has been suspended following allegations of medical negligence after a young boy lost his leg due to gangrene at a government health facility in Goa, officials said on Monday.

The action was taken after an internal review found lapses in treatment and delays in timely medical intervention. Authorities said the case came under scrutiny after the child’s condition deteriorated significantly, ultimately leading to the development of gangrene, which required amputation.

According to preliminary reports, the boy had initially been admitted with a serious medical condition that required close monitoring and urgent care. However, concerns were later raised by the family regarding delays in diagnosis and treatment, prompting a departmental inquiry.

Health officials confirmed that the suspension order was issued pending a detailed investigation into the circumstances that led to the loss of the child’s limb. A committee has been set up to examine medical records, treatment protocols followed, and the sequence of clinical decisions made by the attending doctor.

Authorities stated that if negligence is established, further disciplinary and legal action will be taken as per medical service rules. The hospital administration has also been directed to ensure that such incidents are thoroughly reviewed and that corrective measures are implemented to prevent recurrence.

The child is currently under medical supervision and is receiving post-operative care. Doctors have said that his condition is stable, but he will require long-term rehabilitation and support following the amputation.

The incident has triggered concern among residents and renewed debate over the quality of care in public healthcare facilities. Family members have demanded strict accountability, alleging that timely treatment could have prevented the severe outcome.

Officials from the health department have assured that patient safety protocols will be strengthened and monitoring systems improved across government hospitals in the state. They also emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and adherence to treatment guidelines in critical cases.

The inquiry is ongoing, and a detailed report is expected in the coming days, which will determine further action in the case.
