Three people were injured after a drunk driver allegedly rammed his SUV into another vehicle in west Delhi late Thursday night, police said. The incident took place in the Rajouri Garden area and caused panic among commuters and local residents.
According to Delhi Police, the accused was driving the SUV at high speed when he reportedly lost control and crashed into a car carrying three passengers. The collision badly damaged both vehicles, leaving the occupants injured. Locals immediately alerted police and emergency services after the accident.
Officials said the injured persons were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Police stated that none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. The SUV driver also suffered minor injuries in the crash.
During preliminary investigation, police found that the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. A medical examination reportedly confirmed that the alcohol level in his body was above the legal limit. The accused was detained soon after the incident.
Police have registered a case under sections related to rash and negligent driving, causing injuries, and drunk driving under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act. Investigators are also examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to determine the exact sequence of events.
Residents of the area claimed that reckless driving during late-night hours has become common and demanded stricter traffic monitoring and enforcement in the locality. The accident also led to temporary traffic congestion before the damaged vehicles were removed from the road.
Delhi Police has once again appealed to motorists not to drive under the influence of alcohol, warning that strict action will continue against those violating traffic and safety rules. Officials said drunk driving remains one of the major causes of road accidents in the national capital.
