Kolkata: The Election Commission of India has added around 7 lakh new voters to the electoral rolls in West Bengal ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, marking a significant expansion of the state’s voter base and intensifying political preparations across parties.
According to official election sources, the new additions have come through the Special Summary Revision (SSR) exercise conducted across all districts of the state. The process included applications from first-time voters, particularly young citizens who have recently turned 18, as well as corrections and updates to existing voter details.
The updated electoral roll is expected to play an important role in shaping the political dynamics of the upcoming elections, as both the ruling and opposition parties ramp up their outreach strategies to connect with new and young voters. Officials noted that the inclusion of a large number of first-time voters reflects West Bengal’s growing youth population and increased voter awareness.
The Election Commission of India has also focused on improving accuracy in voter lists by removing duplicate entries, verifying addresses, and ensuring that eligible citizens are not left out of the democratic process. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) carried out door-to-door verification drives in several districts as part of the exercise.
Political parties in the state have welcomed the publication of the updated rolls but have also begun reviewing the list closely. Leaders from major parties are expected to analyse constituency-wise changes to understand how the addition of new voters may impact their electoral prospects.
In districts where urbanisation and migration have increased, the number of new voters has been particularly notable. Rural areas have also seen steady growth in voter registration, driven by awareness campaigns conducted by election authorities.
Election officials have stated that the final electoral roll will continue to be updated until the nomination process begins, allowing eligible citizens to register if they meet the required criteria. They also emphasised that strict monitoring mechanisms are in place to ensure transparency and fairness in the voter registration process.
With elections approaching, the addition of nearly 7 lakh new voters is expected to be a key factor influencing campaign strategies, as political parties intensify efforts to engage with first-time and young voters across West Bengal.
