Chennai: Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has formally resigned from the BJP and launched a new political movement named ‘Idhu Namma Iyakkam’ (This Is Our Movement), claiming that it attracted over 10 lakh registrations within just 10 hours of its launch.
Announcing the initiative in Chennai, Annamalai described the movement as a people-centric platform aimed at bringing transparency, accountability, and grassroots participation into politics. The former IPS officer said the overwhelming response reflects a growing desire among citizens, particularly young people, for an alternative political force in Tamil Nadu.
According to the organizers, the online registration portal witnessed an unprecedented surge in participation shortly after going live, with supporters from across the state signing up to become volunteers. The rapid enrollment has been seen as a demonstration of Annamalai's personal popularity and organizational reach beyond his former party.
Annamalai said the movement would focus on clean governance, leadership development, and public service. While it is currently structured as a socio-political movement, he indicated that its future course, including possible electoral participation, would be decided after consultations with supporters and volunteers.
The launch has already had an impact on Tamil Nadu's political landscape, with several former BJP office-bearers and grassroots workers reportedly expressing support for the initiative. Political observers believe the movement could emerge as a significant force if it succeeds in converting its early enthusiasm into a sustained organizational network.
Supporters have hailed the development as the beginning of a new chapter in Tamil Nadu politics, arguing that the state is ready for a political alternative beyond the traditional Dravidian parties. Social media platforms have also witnessed widespread discussion about the movement and its potential impact on future elections.
However, analysts caution that large-scale registrations and public enthusiasm do not automatically translate into electoral success. They note that the real challenge will be building a robust party structure, expanding grassroots presence, and presenting a clear political roadmap.
Even so, the claim of 10 lakh sign-ups within 10 hours has drawn national attention and positioned ‘Idhu Namma Iyakkam’ as one of the most talked-about new political initiatives in the country. With Tamil Nadu heading toward another crucial electoral cycle, Annamalai's next moves are expected to be closely watched by supporters and rivals alike.
