Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday launched the ₹78-crore first phase of the redevelopment project of the iconic Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai, aimed at improving infrastructure and enhancing facilities for the millions of devotees who visit the shrine every year.
Speaking at the launch event, Fadnavis said the redevelopment project is designed to preserve the temple’s religious and cultural significance while modernizing visitor amenities. The first phase will focus on improving crowd management systems, upgrading public facilities, enhancing security arrangements and creating a more convenient experience for pilgrims.
The redevelopment plan is expected to address long-standing challenges related to congestion around the temple premises, particularly during festivals and special religious occasions when large numbers of devotees gather for darshan. Authorities believe the project will help streamline movement and reduce waiting times for visitors.
Officials associated with the project said the new infrastructure will include improved entry and exit routes, better queue management, upgraded sanitation facilities and enhanced accessibility for senior citizens and differently-abled devotees. The redevelopment will also incorporate modern safety measures and emergency response systems.
The Siddhivinayak Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, is among the most visited and revered temples in India, attracting devotees from across the country and abroad. Prominent political leaders, film personalities, business figures and ordinary worshippers regularly visit the shrine.
Fadnavis emphasized that the redevelopment would be carried out with careful attention to maintaining the temple’s spiritual character and architectural heritage. He noted that the project seeks to balance modernization with the preservation of traditions associated with the historic place of worship.
Temple authorities welcomed the initiative, stating that the upgraded infrastructure would significantly improve the experience for devotees and help accommodate growing visitor numbers in the coming years.
The first phase of the project, estimated at ₹78 crore, marks the beginning of a larger redevelopment plan that is expected to be implemented in stages. Once completed, the project is expected to transform the temple precinct into a more organized, secure and pilgrim-friendly destination while retaining its religious and cultural importance.
