Ahead of voting in the 2026 Assembly elections, mock polling exercises were successfully conducted across polling stations in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu to ensure smooth and error-free electoral proceedings. The drills, carried out early in the morning before the official start of voting, are a mandatory step by the Election Commission of India to verify the proper functioning of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) systems.
Polling officials, in the presence of polling agents from various political parties, conducted these mock tests to demonstrate that the machines were recording votes accurately. After the completion of mock polling, results were shown to the agents and the machines were cleared before the actual voting process began. This transparent procedure is designed to build confidence among voters and political stakeholders regarding the integrity of the electoral process.
In Tamil Nadu, where voting is being held in a single phase across all 234 constituencies, election authorities reported that mock polling was completed without major glitches in most booths. Minor technical issues were flagged at a few locations but were resolved swiftly by on-ground technical teams, ensuring no delay in the start of polling.
Similarly, in West Bengal, which is witnessing a multi-phase election, mock polling was conducted across all booths scheduled for the current phase. Given the scale of the election and the presence of several sensitive polling stations, officials paid special attention to security and technical preparedness. Central forces and state police personnel were deployed to maintain order and assist voters.
The mock polling process plays a crucial role in minimizing disruptions during actual voting hours. By identifying and fixing potential issues beforehand, authorities aim to ensure a seamless voting experience for millions of voters. It also helps reinforce transparency, as party representatives can directly observe the process and raise objections, if any, before polling begins.
With these preparatory steps completed, voting commenced smoothly in both states, with voters lining up early to exercise their franchise. The successful conduct of mock polling reflects the Election Commission’s focus on credibility, efficiency, and voter trust in one of the world’s largest democratic exercises.
