An FIR has been registered against Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and two other MPs over a controversial skit staged during an Opposition protest in the Parliament complex. The case was registered in Varanasi following allegations that the performance insulted Sanatan Dharma and hurt religious sentiments.

Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, and Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad have also been named in the case. The controversy relates to a street-play-style performance staged by Opposition leaders on July 31. The skit was presented as a political protest over alleged irregularities involving donations made for the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

According to reports, the performance depicted an alleged theft of offerings made to the Ram Temple. Opposition leaders used the skit to raise questions about the handling of temple donations and to target the BJP-led government politically.

The performance, however, triggered a strong reaction from Hindu religious groups and others who objected to the portrayal of the Ram Temple and religious issues. A group of seers and lawyers subsequently approached police in Varanasi, alleging that the skit was offensive and had hurt the sentiments of devotees. The development has added another flashpoint to the ongoing political confrontation between the ruling BJP and Opposition parties. The BJP has criticised the protest and accused the Opposition of crossing the line while attacking the government over the Ram Temple issue.

Earlier, a Delhi BJP delegation led by New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj had also approached police with a complaint over the protest, seeking action against Rahul Gandhi, Pappu Yadav, Awadhesh Prasad and others. That complaint alleged that the demonstration had hurt Hindu sentiments. The FIR does not establish that the allegations are true; those claims will have to be examined during the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.

The controversy is likely to intensify the political debate around the Ram Temple, religious sentiments and the limits of political satire. The Opposition is expected to defend the protest as a form of political expression, while critics are demanding accountability over what they consider disrespectful treatment of a matter of religious importance.

With the case now formally registered, the police investigation will determine what further legal action, if any, follows against the leaders named in the FIR.
