Delhi Police have apprehended five Bangladeshi nationals for allegedly staying in India beyond the validity of their visas during a special drive against illegal immigrants and visa overstayers in the national capital. The operation was carried out by the Mukherjee Nagar Police Station in North-West Delhi.
According to police officials, the case came to light after local residents reported a minor altercation between two groups in the area. During the incident, two men were heard speaking in Bangla, which raised suspicion among locals, who then informed the police. Acting on the information, a special team was formed to verify the identity and legal status of the suspected individuals.
During questioning, police discovered that the two men were living in a rented accommodation in Indira Vikas Colony, Mukherjee Nagar, along with three other Bangladeshi nationals. Further investigation revealed that all five had entered India legally through air routes from Bangladesh on different dates but continued to stay in the country after their visas had expired.
The apprehended individuals were identified as Rahmat Ullah (23), Mohd Ashraful (23), Salman Bhuiyan (25), Md Rashel (37), and Md Rahim Mia (33), all residents of Brahmanbaria district in Bangladesh. Police said the group had reportedly planned to travel to Greece in search of employment opportunities and had been waiting for job offers or interview calls since December 2025. During this period, they allegedly remained in Delhi despite their visas expiring.
Investigators also found that the five men initially stayed in different hotels across Delhi before shifting to Mukherjee Nagar. Police alleged that an associate named Ganpati Biswas, a resident of Malda in West Bengal, helped them arrange accommodation after their visas expired. Efforts are underway to trace and apprehend him for further investigation.
Delhi Police stated that the inquiry clearly established illegal overstay beyond the permitted visa period. The five Bangladeshi nationals have been produced before the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), and deportation proceedings have been initiated in accordance with legal procedures.
Officials said the arrests are part of an ongoing campaign to identify foreign nationals residing illegally in the city and to take action against violations of immigration and visa regulations.
