Five police officials in Maharashtra have been suspended after several deaths were linked to the consumption of suspected illicit liquor in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The action came amid growing public outrage and pressure on authorities to crack down on the illegal liquor trade.
According to officials, at least 14 to 15 people lost their lives after allegedly consuming spurious liquor over the past few days. Several others were hospitalized, with some reported to be in critical condition. The deaths were reported mainly from the Phugewadi area of Pimpri-Chinchwad and the Hadapsar region of Pune.
The suspended officials include personnel from both Pune Police and Pimpri-Chinchwad Police. Authorities said the officers were removed from duty for allegedly failing to prevent the illegal production and distribution of toxic liquor in their jurisdictions. Reports also stated that additional excise department officials faced disciplinary action as investigations expanded.
Police have arrested several people in connection with the case, including an alleged key supplier. Investigators believe the liquor may have been mixed with methanol, a highly toxic chemical that can cause blindness, organ failure, and death when consumed. Preliminary findings suggest the contaminated alcohol was distributed through illegal local networks before reaching victims.
The Maharashtra government has handed the probe to the Crime Investigation Department (CID) to ensure a detailed and independent investigation. Officials are examining how the illegal liquor operation continued despite existing enforcement measures and whether there were lapses in monitoring by local authorities.
The tragedy has once again highlighted concerns over the illegal liquor trade in parts of Maharashtra. Opposition leaders and local residents have demanded strict action against those responsible, including officials found guilty of negligence. Authorities have promised a thorough investigation and stronger measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
