Security forces have destroyed 23 illegal bunkers and seized 18 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in separate operations across Manipur, in a major crackdown aimed at restoring stability in the violence-hit state.
According to official reports, the bunkers were demolished in the Ukhrul district, particularly in hill villages under the Litan police station area, including Mongkot Chepu, Shongphel, Mullam, Sirarakhong, and Ringue. These bunkers were allegedly constructed by armed groups to strengthen their positions amid ongoing ethnic tensions in the region.
Security officials said the bunkers were being used for strategic and defensive purposes, as rival groups in the area have increasingly fortified villages during the prolonged unrest. The operation was carried out as part of intensified area domination and search missions in vulnerable and fringe locations.
In a separate operation in Tengnoupal district, security forces recovered a significant cache of arms and explosives. These included two single-barrel rifles, four 9mm pistols with magazines, and 18 IEDs, all of which were destroyed on the spot to prevent any potential threat.
Additionally, authorities recovered other items such as ammunition, fired cartridge cases, and equipment believed to be used by insurgent groups. Officials noted that such recoveries highlight the continued presence of illegal arms networks in the state.
The operations come amid ongoing efforts by security forces, including the Army, Assam Rifles, and Manipur Police, to curb violence and ensure safe movement of civilians. Convoys are being escorted along key highways, and strict security measures have been enforced in sensitive areas.
Manipur has been witnessing ethnic conflict since 2023, with communities arming themselves and creating fortified zones, including bunkers, to defend territories. The situation has led to repeated security operations targeting illegal arms and militant infrastructure.
Officials reiterated that such actions will continue as part of a broader strategy to dismantle militant setups and restore normalcy in the state. The latest operation is being seen as a significant step toward reducing threats posed by armed groups and preventing further escalation of violence.
