Former Rajasthan minister Mahesh Joshi has been arrested in connection with a massive alleged scam linked to the Jal Jeevan Mission project, estimated to be worth around ₹960 crore, officials confirmed on Thursday.

According to investigation agencies, the case involves alleged irregularities in the implementation of rural drinking water supply projects under the government scheme. The allegations include manipulation of tenders, procedural violations, and financial misappropriation during the execution of contracts awarded for pipeline and infrastructure works.

Officials said Joshi was taken into custody after questioning by enforcement agencies, following months of investigation and scrutiny of financial records, contractor agreements, and administrative approvals. The arrest marks a significant development in one of the largest corruption probes linked to public welfare infrastructure projects in the state.

Investigators claim that the irregularities led to inflated project costs and unauthorized benefits to certain contractors. The alleged scam is believed to have impacted multiple districts where water supply projects were being implemented under the mission aimed at providing tap water connections to rural households.

The arrest has triggered strong political reactions across Rajasthan. Opposition parties have demanded a deeper and impartial investigation, alleging that large-scale corruption may have taken place in the execution of central and state-funded schemes. They have also called for accountability at higher administrative levels.

On the other hand, supporters of Joshi have described the arrest as politically motivated, claiming that due process has not been fully followed. They have expressed confidence that the former minister will be cleared of all charges once the investigation is completed.

Officials involved in the probe stated that further arrests cannot be ruled out as the investigation expands into contractor networks and departmental approvals linked to the project. Financial documents and digital records are also being examined to trace the flow of funds.

The case has once again brought attention to the implementation of large-scale infrastructure schemes in India, particularly those aimed at rural development. Authorities have emphasized that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty of corruption or misuse of public funds.

Joshi is expected to be produced before a court, where investigators may seek custody for further interrogation. The case remains under active investigation, and more details are expected as agencies continue to examine the extent of the alleged irregularities.
