Kolkata: Former West Bengal minister Sujit Bose was taken to Bidhan Nagar Hospital for a medical examination on Monday, shortly after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities.
According to officials, Bose was produced before medical personnel as part of standard procedure following his detention. Security was tightened around the hospital premises during the visit, with a large police deployment ensuring that law-and-order was maintained and no untoward incident occurred.
The arrest was carried out by the Enforcement Directorate after hours of questioning related to alleged financial irregularities linked to recruitment and administrative decisions during his tenure in public office. Sources familiar with the investigation said that the case involves examination of documents, financial transactions, and alleged misuse of official position, although no formal court conviction has been made at this stage.
Bose, a prominent political figure in West Bengal politics, has been under the scanner of central agencies for some time. The ED has been probing multiple angles in the case, including alleged money flow and connections with various individuals linked to administrative appointments.
Following his medical check-up at Bidhan Nagar Hospital, he was escorted back under tight security. Officials stated that he is currently in custody and will be produced before a competent court as per legal procedure.
The development has triggered strong political reactions across the state. Supporters of Bose have termed the arrest as politically motivated, alleging misuse of central investigative agencies. On the other hand, opposition voices have demanded a thorough and transparent investigation, stating that accountability must be ensured regardless of political affiliation.
Meanwhile, law enforcement authorities have maintained that the investigation is ongoing and all procedures are being followed strictly under judicial supervision. They added that further questioning and evidence review will continue in the coming days.
The case has added to the ongoing political tension in West Bengal, where several high-profile figures have recently come under investigation by central agencies. Analysts believe the developments could have wider political implications depending on the progress of the legal proceedings.
As of now, no official charges have been proven in court, and the matter remains under active investigation.
