Actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay on Wednesday made major welfare promises on the final day of campaigning for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026, pledging 200 units of free electricity and free bus travel for women “within minutes” of forming the government.
Addressing a series of rallies, Vijay said his party would prioritise immediate relief measures aimed at easing the financial burden on households. “Within minutes of forming the government, we will provide 200 units of free electricity and ensure free bus travel for women,” he announced, drawing loud cheers from supporters.
The TVK chief positioned these as part of a broader pro-people governance model, emphasising affordability, social welfare, and women’s empowerment. He argued that rising living costs have put pressure on ordinary families and that such schemes would offer direct and visible benefits.
Vijay also sought to distinguish his party from established players like the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that TVK represents a “fresh and honest alternative.” He accused traditional parties of making promises without timely implementation, asserting that his government would act swiftly.
The promises of free electricity and bus travel are significant, as welfare schemes have historically played a key role in Tamil Nadu’s electoral politics. Several parties have previously introduced or expanded similar benefits, making them a central issue in campaigns.
Opposition parties reacted cautiously to Vijay’s announcement. While some leaders questioned the financial feasibility of the schemes, others dismissed them as election-time populism aimed at attracting voters, particularly women and middle-income households.
Despite criticism, Vijay remained confident, urging voters to “choose change” and give his party an opportunity to govern. He emphasised transparency and accountability, saying that his administration would be results-driven and responsive to public needs.
The final day of campaigning saw intense political activity across the state, with leaders making last-ditch efforts to influence voters before the silence period began. Vijay’s welfare-focused pitch is likely to resonate with sections of the electorate, though its actual impact will only become clear once voting concludes.
As Tamil Nadu heads to the polls, TVK’s promises add another dimension to an already competitive electoral battle dominated by both established parties and emerging political forces.
