Police in Guwahati have uncovered an alleged gambling racket operating during the Indian Premier League (IPL) final, leading to multiple arrests and the seizure of cash, mobile phones, and other materials linked to the operation.
According to officials, the raid was carried out following specific intelligence inputs about illegal betting activities being conducted during the high-profile IPL final match. A police team conducted searches at a location in the city and reportedly found several individuals allegedly involved in organizing and participating in gambling activities linked to the cricket match.
Authorities said a significant amount of cash was recovered from the spot along with mobile phones, notebooks, and other items believed to have been used for maintaining betting records and communication. Investigators are currently examining the seized devices to identify possible links to a larger betting network operating in Assam and other parts of the country.
Police officials stated that those detained are being questioned and legal action has been initiated under relevant provisions of the law. Further investigations are underway to determine whether the racket had connections with interstate gambling syndicates or online betting operations.
The raid took place during the IPL final, a period when law enforcement agencies across several states typically increase surveillance to prevent illegal betting and match-related gambling activities. Officials noted that major sporting events often attract unauthorized gambling networks that attempt to exploit public interest in cricket.
Senior police officers said strict action would continue against illegal gambling operations and warned that such activities are punishable under the law. Authorities also urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid involvement in unlawful betting activities.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not ruled out additional arrests as they analyze evidence collected during the operation. Officials said more details are expected to emerge once the interrogation of suspects and forensic examination of seized devices are completed.
The bust is being seen as one of the significant anti-gambling operations conducted in Guwahati during this year’s IPL season, highlighting the continued efforts of law enforcement agencies to crack down on illegal betting networks surrounding major sporting events.
