Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi has launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Assam government, accusing it of failing to fulfill the expectations of ordinary citizens and ignoring the growing burden of rising fuel and commodity prices.
Addressing reporters at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati, Gogoi alleged that the state government has not taken effective steps to control the increasing cost of essential goods and petroleum products. He claimed that the continuous rise in prices has put immense pressure on household budgets and exposed what he described as the government's “anti-people” approach.
“BJP failed to meet the hopes and aspirations of the common people,” Gogoi said while criticizing the administration led by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. According to the Congress leader, people had expected relief from inflation and better economic management, but instead are facing higher expenses for fuel and daily necessities.
Gogoi argued that rising fuel prices have a cascading effect on the economy, increasing transportation costs and ultimately driving up the prices of essential commodities. He said the impact is being felt most severely by middle-class families, daily wage earners, farmers, and small business owners who are already struggling with economic challenges.
The Congress leader also alleged that the ruling party has become more focused on internal political calculations than addressing public concerns. He claimed that discussions within the government are centered on power equations rather than measures to provide relief to citizens affected by inflation.
His remarks come at a politically significant time as parties in Assam prepare for future electoral battles. Gogoi said the Congress is reviewing its recent setbacks while simultaneously working to reconnect with voters on issues such as price rise, unemployment, and public welfare. He maintained that these issues would remain central to the party’s campaign strategy in the coming months.
The BJP has repeatedly defended its governance record in Assam, highlighting infrastructure development, welfare schemes, and economic initiatives undertaken during its tenure. However, the opposition continues to target the government over inflation and fuel costs, arguing that these issues directly affect the daily lives of citizens.
With fuel prices and the cost of living remaining key concerns for many households, the debate between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress is expected to intensify as both sides seek to shape public opinion ahead of future political contests.
