Tension gripped Noapara in West Bengal ahead of the crucial vote counting day after unidentified gunmen allegedly attacked the residence of a BJP district secretary late Saturday night.
According to local sources, the incident took place in the Noapara area of North 24 Parganas district. Armed assailants reportedly opened fire targeting the house of the BJP functionary, triggering panic among residents in the neighbourhood. Family members were inside the house at the time, but fortunately no injuries have been reported.
Police officials said they received information about the firing and quickly rushed to the spot. Security has since been tightened in the area, especially with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4. Preliminary investigations suggest the attackers arrived on motorcycles, fired multiple rounds, and fled before authorities could reach the location.
The BJP has alleged that the attack is politically motivated and linked to rising tensions ahead of the counting process. Party leaders claimed that their workers are being intimidated in several parts of the state. However, no official confirmation has yet been made regarding the motive behind the incident.
Local police have started an investigation and are scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify the suspects. A case has been registered, and efforts are underway to track down those involved.
The incident has added to the already charged political atmosphere in West Bengal, where security arrangements have been heightened across multiple counting centres to prevent any untoward incidents.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm while assuring that strict action will be taken once those responsible are identified.
